Islam and Europe’s Judeo-Christian identity

An area where the ECI’s spiritual values start to blend with its political convictions consists of the issues of Europe’s identity and Islam. Christian Zionists contend that Islam is a comprehensive system whose spirituality is derived from the corrupted Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament, and whose political values, i.e. the Sharia law, diametrically oppose the values that underpin and sustain Western democracies. The ECI’s denunciation of Islam as a false religion remains for most of the time a spiritual position, although in January 2010 its annual policy conference9 in the EP politicised its anti-Islam stance. The conference speakers included a human rights activist, David Littman, and a controversial historian, Bat Ye’or, and raised the issues of human rights abuse in Muslim countries, EU immigration policy, and also the implications of the currently assertive Islam for Europe and Israel. Although the overall message, presented in an alarming tone, urged European policy makers to prevent the Islamisation of Europe, the highlight of the conference was Littman’s presentation of human rights abuses in Islamic countries and a call to the EU to uphold universal human rights at the UN (Littman, 2010). Likewise, several years previously, at an ECI 2006 annual conference, the panel discussing the relationship of Europe and Islam included a former French Minister of Health Georgina Dufoix, who proclaimed:

The caliphate [the rulership of Islam] is incompatible with European values… These values are not only contrary to Judeo-Christian values but are also in contradiction with generally accepted European values such as freedom, brotherhood and equality… This should not lead us to fear or hatred but to a true soul searching in order to rediscover the Judeo-Christian roots which can again make Europe strong and also appeal to those of other faiths.10
